Santa Anita: Leader falls in 3rd

Email

Tokubetsu, the even-money favorite, broke down in early stretch while leading Sunday's third race for maiden 3-year-old fillies. Jockey Martin Garcia was thrown heavily and stayed on the ground momentarily before sitting up. He was taken to first aid for evaluation. Tokubetsu was euthanized, according to track stewards.

The incident occred before the eighth pole when Tokubetsu had an advantage of about three lengths. The filly, trained by Bob Baffert, was making her fourth career start, having finished second in her first three races.

The race was won by Cornpiper ($32), a first-time starter by Indian Charlie trained by Steve Asmussen.
