Santa Anita: Jock race tightens

The race for the riding title between jockeys Rafael Bejarano and Joel Rosario may go to the final day of the meeting, April 17.

Through Saturday, defending champion Bejarano had 55 winners, with Rosario at 52. Rosario had three winners on Saturday - Belo Purse ($3.40) in the second, Ultra Blend ($4.60) in the seventh race, the Valentine Dancer Handicap, and Clubhouse Rules ($8.60) in the last race. Bejarano did not ride a winner.

The title may be determined by which jockey travels less in March and April. Rosario is booked to spend a week in Dubai in late March, while both jockeys could easily miss days in coming weekends to ride major stakes out of town. For now, though, the rankings will be decided on an hourly basis, since both jockeys ride numerous races each day.

Sunday, Bejarano has five mounts, while Rosario has eight rides on the nine-race program.
