Santa Anita: It's PVal's pick 3

Email

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela swept the first three races on Sunday, winning the third race on Star Navigator, who needed a strong ride to win the maiden claimer over 6 1-2 furlongs.

Valenzuela had Star Navigator ($9.80) on the inside on the turn, was forced to wait briefly on the turn, and then caught pacesetter Bryan Danniel, the 6-5 favorite, to win by 2 1-2 lengths in 1:16.05. All that occured after Star Navigator was bumped severely at the start.

Earlier, Valenzuela won the first two races on Brayden Buddy ($7.60) and Roulette It Roll ($9.40). The $1 Valenzuela pick 3 paid $62.60.

More wins are expected. Valenzuela rides Briecat, the 6-5 favorite, in Sunday's fifth race, the Santa Lucia Stakes. He has mounts in the fourth through eighth races, but not the ninth.

Valenzuela's success on Sunday was preceded by a four-win day on Saturday. Despite the barrage of victories, Valenzuela remains in third in the jockey's standings with 51 wins, trailing Joel Rosario (77 wins) and Rafael Bejarano (73).

Bryan Daniel was claimed in a two-way shake by Hector Palma.
