Santa Anita: Hopes for old 'Dan'

Yodelan Dan, the 8-year-old gelding, makes his 47th career start in Friday's seventh race.Trainer Jeff Mullins expects the veteran to give a game race - he often does - but a win could be difficult because of the conditions of the optional claimer over 1 1-8 miles on turf.

Yodelan Dan typically comes from off the pace, and with the rails 24 feet out from the permanent position, the course is more narrow and does not play well for closers.

"He always has to run during the week when the rails are out," Mullins said. "He has to run double hard to win."

Still, Yodelan Dan, who races for Larry and Marianne Williams, is difficult to dismiss. He was second by a nose in a one-mile race on March 11 when rails were at 24 feet, and third on Feb. 4 in a race over 1 1-4 miles on turf when rails were out 15 feet.

Yodelan Dan will be after his first win since a $32,000 claimer at Hollywood Park last October.

In Friday's race, he must beat the European imports Foolish Comment and Power Series. Circa'sgoldengear won an optional claimer for statebreds over a mile on turf on Feb. 5 in his last start, and has run well in his last several starts.
