Santa Anita: Gomez earns win

Email

Jockey Garrett Gomez needed a patient ride to win Sunday's sixth race on Smart Spending.

Twice in the final three furlongs, Gomez was stuck in traffic on Smart Spending, waiting room on the turn when racing behind the leaders, and being forced to check in the stretch when racing between horses. Racing room developed for Smart Spending in the final furlong, and the 4-year-old gelding showed a quick acceleration to win the starter allowance over 6 1-2 furlongs by a head over 14-1 Resplendently. Pleasant Earth finished third, a nose behind Resplendently.

Smart Spending ($5.80) was the second choice in the betting and was timed in 1:15.72.

The field was reduced by one when Marcy's Woods was scratched with three minutes to post for "failing to warm up properly," according to track stewards. Marcy's Woods was 16-1 when he was withdrawn.

Smart Spending was the second winner of the day for Gomez and trainer Carla Gaines.
