Santa Anita: Gladding wins Cal debut

Email

Gladding, a recent import from Florida, won his California debut in Wednesday's seventh race, putting away Oilisblackgold in early stretch to win the one-mile race by 2 1-4 lengths. Gladding was timed in 1:34.19 on a wet-fast track.

Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Gladding ($4) has one victory in eight starts at Calder for trainer Harold Schultz. A 3-year-old geldling, Gladding arrived in California in late November.

The style of the win suggested that Gladding could be a candidate for the $200,000 Strub Stakes for 4-year-olds over 1 1-8 miles on Feb. 5.
