Santa Anita: Fluke holds on in Kilroe

A year after missing a win in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile by a nose, Fluke prevailed in Saturday's running, beating 6-5 favorite Caracortado by a head.

Had the race been another 20 yards, the result would have been reversed. Caracortado was last of nine after a half-mile and still seventh with a furlong remaining, but rallied well to just miss.

Fluke deserves credit for his victory. A 6-year-old horse, Fluke ran a mile in 1:33.50, the fastest turf mile of the meeting. Trained by Humberto Ascanio, Fluke has finished first or second in his last eight races of his 16-race career.

The race was marred by a severe injury suffered by Lieve on the backstretch. He injured his left hind leg and was euthanized.
