Email

Southern Fireball ($19) pulled an upset of the day in Friday's seventh race, leading throughout an allowance race for fillies and mares and holding off a late run from 4-5 favorite Gilded Gem to win by a head.

Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Southern Fireball, the longest shot in a field of four, ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:15.11 after setting early fractions of 23.02 and 45.50 seconds.

Trained by Doug O'Neill, Southern Fireball, 4, ended an eight-race losing streak dating back to an allowance race here last April. The filly races for a partnership and is trained by Doug O'Neill. Through the seventh race, O'Neill is second in the trainer's standings with 25 wins, two less than Bob Baffert, who trains Gilded Gem.
