Santa Anita: Fast times today

Email

The main track is producing remarkably quick times.

In the fourth race, $20,000 claimers ran six furlongs in 1:09.50. In the fifth race, a starter allowance, Speed Bias, a 3-year-old gelding who came from just off the pace, ran six furlongs in 1:08.92, outfinihsing Requistion by 1 1-4 lengths. Gnarly Dude set a quick pace of 21.17 and 43.75 seconds, but faded to finish fourth in the field of 10.

The quick main track has been described as firm by trainers who walked the surface earlier today. Rain fell overnight, and while Saturday morning was clear, rain resumed after 2 p.m.

Two horses were vanned off in the first five races - Johny Bonita, a 38-1 shot, who finished last in the second race; and Unbridle's Dream, who set the pace but faded to finish last in the Grade 2 San Luis Obispo Stakes, the day's only turf race.
