Santa Anita: El Vino's upset

El Vino, who worked with 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta at times last year, won his second consecutive race in a 13-1 upset in Sunday's eighth race.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer John Shirreffs and owners Jerry and Ann Moss (Team Zenyatta's trainer and owners), El Vino held off a late run from Tamarack Smarty to win an allowance race on the hillside turf course by a half-length. El Vino ($29.20) ran about 6 1-2 furlongs on turf in 1:13.47.

The field was reduced to 10 runners when Brace Yourselves, a 12-1 shot, was scratched after failing to warm up well, according to track stewards.

El Vino, a 5-year-old gelding, has won 2 of 4 starts. He worked with Zenyatta last October as part of a team that gave Zenyatta rivals to run with during the workout. Zenyatta later finished second to Blame in the Breedes' Cup Classic, her only loss in 20 starts.
