Santa Anita: Consolation for Carl

Email

Trainer Carl O'Callaghan, whose top horse Kinsale King was scratched from Saturday's $2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai, won Saturday's fourth race at Santa Anita with the allowance-class runner Leaving New York ($12.60).

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, his third winner of the day, Leaving New York rallied wide to win the race over 6 1-2 furlongs by 2 1-4 lengths over Nextdoorneighbor in 1:15.06.

Leaving New York won the first leg of a pick six that drew a pool of $190,452. The 4-year-old gelding was on the also-eligible list for Saturday's race until drawing into the race on Friday's scratch time. Saturday's race was Leaving New York's first start since a fourth in the Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar last August. He was a 23-1 winner of an optional claimer there last August.
