Santa Anita: Close start to pick 6

Email

Tribal Nation ($17.60) held off a late threat from 9-5 favorite Visual Intensity to win Saturday's fifth race, the first leg of a pick six that drew a pool of $216,359.

There were two late scratches - Warren's Big Cat was withdrawn a few minutes to post and was reported to be off in his left foreleg. Carlsbad Lagoon became upset in the gate and was withdrawn.

Tribal Nation has had his share of recent misfortune. Trained by Anthony Saavedra for Baseline Equine, Tribal Nation unseated jockey Garrett Gomez at the start of a maiden race on the hillside turf course on March 17.

Tribal Nation, who was ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, beat Visual Intensity by a half-length, finishing a mile on turf in 1:36.62.
