Santa Anita: Big payoff - for owner

Email

Suances Flower returned just $6.80 as a lukewarm favorite in Sunday's third race for statebred maiden females, but the race was remarkably more valuable for owner Jed Cohen's Red Baron's Barn.

Suances Flower earned $32,400 for the win, and an additional $20,000 as a statebred winning a maiden special weight race in Southern California. Trained by Darrell Vienna and ridden by David Flores, Suances Flower held off a late threat from Finish Rich in Nyc to win by a head, running six furlongs in 1:109.98. The filly was making her second start, having finished second in a $32,000 claiming race for maidens at Hollywood Park last month.

Had Suances Flower won a maiden claimer, she would not have been eligible for the $20,000 bonus, which is limited to the maiden special weight class.

Sunday's third race was run in a light rain, and was marred by an injury to 7-1 chance Ever Ask Me Again, a second-time starter. Ever Ask Me Again, a 4-year-old filly by In Excess, was pulled up on the backstretch with an suffered an injury to her left hind. She was taken to trainer George Papaprodromou's barn for observation.
