Santa Anita: Another Stra-Bean bomber

Email

Jockey Kayla Stra and trainer Bob Bean combined for a surprise win in Friday's fourth race with Ellie L. ($119), the longest shot in the field.

The complexion of the one-mile turf for $25,000 claimers who were non-winners of two changed when Lisa Cozzene, the 3-5 favorite, was pulled up with a leg injury while racing just behind the pace on the backstretch.  She suffered a severe injury to her right foreleg, according to track stewards.

Ellie L., who gave Bean and Stra their second winners of the meeting, both together with longshots, caught 11-1 Jordanelle in the final furlong to win by a half-length.

The $2 double in the third and fourth races paid $233. Star Dance M D ($3.80) won the third race, a maiden claimer.

The pick six pool reached just $108,805 on Friday, one of the lowest of the meeting. If there is a carryover, which is possible following the win by Ellie L., it would be approximately $57,600 for the 11-race Santa Anita Derby program on Saturday.
