Santa Anita: Amazombie had to win

Amazombie had an ideal trip in Saturday's $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint, stalking a wicked pace and holding off a late run from the Florida invader Apriority to win the six-furlong race by a head.

Amazombie ($24.80) was fourth on the backstretch and third on the turn before moving into contention with a wide move under jockey Mike Smith in early stretch. Amazombie prevailed by a head  over Apriority, finishing in 1:07.26.

Credit Cost of Freedom for running a game third. An 8-year-old gelding, Cost of Freedom fought for the lead with Excessive Passion through fractions of 20.80 and 42.72 seconds, led by a length at the eighth pole and never quit, finishing a head behind Apriority. Excessive Passion, making his first start since May, faded to finish seventh in the field of nine.

Amazombie made his stakes debut in the Sunshine Millions Sprint and is trained and co-owned by Bill Spawr.
