Santa Anita: Akkadian shines in 3rd


Akkadian, an expensive 2-year-old in-training purchase last year, scored a sharp win in a maiden race over 1 1-8 miles on turf in Thursday's third race, the first leg of the pick six.

Akkadian ($4.20) was ridden by Garrett Gomez, who kept his mount behind a quick early pace of 22.11 and 46.78 seconds set by Popular Cause, swooped to the lead in early stretch and was not asked for a run late. Akkadian was timed in 1:48.33.

Unex Dali finished second, followed by Seeking Solace in the field of six. Unbridled Kimanchi, a 34-1 shot, was scratched at the gate becuase of injury, according to track stewards.

Akkadian was purchased for $270,000 at the April 2010 Keeneland sale of 2-year-olds in-training. 

Thursday's pick six drew a pool of $138,373.
