Santa Anita: A $62,500 claim in 8th


Matto Mondo, who finished third in the 2009 Santa Anita Handicap, was claimed for $62,500 in Friday's eighth race by trainer Doug O'Neill.

Matto Mondo won the one-mile optional claimer on turf by 1 3-4 lengths over Pleasure to Ride, a 5-1 shot.

Matto Mondo raced for trainer Richard Mandella and owner Yatse Stable for Friday's race.

Matto Mondo missed all of 2010 the last nine months of 2009 and all of 2010 because of a tendon injury. This year, racing in classes ranging from high-priced claimers to starter allowances to a minor stakes, Matto Mondo has wonn 2 of 7 starts. He won a $40,000 claimer at Del Mar on July 23.

O'Neill has claimed several horses from Mandella in recent years, including the female turf sprinter Separate Forest, who later won a stakes for O'Neill.
