Santa Anita: 5 start, 3 finish

Email

A horse who pulled up shortly after the start and a faller in the stretch marred Thursday's third race at Santa Anita.

Golden Augusto, an 9-1 shot, was pulled by jockey Kayla Stra within a furlong of the start of the $10,000 claiming race over a mile. Stra later told the stewards that Golden Augusto took a bad step.

In the stretch, Sky Thrill, ridden by Martin Pedroza, fell while racing in fourth-place.  Golden Augusto was vanned off. Sky Thrill laid on his side for several minutes before rising. He was vanned to the barn area as a precaution. Pedroza fell clear of Sky Thrill and walked off under his own power. He was later examined in first aid and cleared to resume riding.

The race was won by Mr. Saturdaynight ($3.20). As a result of only three horses finishing, the winning $1 superfecta combination was 5-6-2-all, representing Manofgold (5-2) and Boston Baked Bean (28-1) in second and third. The $1 superfecta payoff was $14.60.
