Ruidoso Downs: Burgess into Ruidoso Hall of Fame

Jerry Burgess, the retired jockey who is currently a steward at Lone Star Park, will be inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame a little later tonight. Burgess is part of a 2011 class that also includes Peppers Pride, who went 19-for-19 to set a modern Thoroughbred mark for consecutive wins; John Bassett, who has trained two winners of the All American Futurity; and John T.L. Jones, of Walmac Farm.

Burgess guided Bugs Alive in 75 to victory in the 1975 All American Futurity. Other prestigious races he won include the Vessels Maturity aboard Dash for Cash, and the Rainbow Futurity with Mighty Deck Three. Burgess rode regularly in California, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. He is a 67-year-old nativeof Oklahoma.
