Rachel Alexandra - a photographic look at the amazing career of the 2009 Horse of the Year

With the announcement of the 2010 Horse of the Year just around the corner, here's a photographic look back at one of history's greatest race fillies, Rachel Alexandra.  I doubt I'll ever see another filly win the Preakness, Haskell and Woodward.

The photos, taken by Michael Amoruso, Alysse Jacobs, Tom Keyser, Justin N. Lane, Barbara Livingston and Tod Marks are in no particular order - but I'll bet many Rachel fans will recognize just when many were taken!  Congratulations - and thanks - again to all the connections of the 2009 Horse of the Year...

Rachel has an amazing foal now, but I still think she, her trainer and all of her fans were so very misuses by the way in which she was retired. She should have been honored as the tremendous horse that she is. Sam

Barbara: A beautiful collection of Rachel...So many of her fans are worried about her and this compilation helps us all feel close to her again. Through these images, I feel and can see the sadness and lonliness in her eyes. What a beautiful majestic creature who simply fell into the wrong hands.....Most who talk about Rachel aspire to her 3 yr. old campaign ...but look at the price she paid for it. A beautiful girl who was never allowed to realize her true potential.....Thank you for allowing us to see her again because one cannot find but a single solitary picture of her at Stonestreet staring out into the cold all alone.

I would love to see your racing pictures appear every year in book form (The Year in Racing Series, by Barbara Livingston - and or - The Blood Horse). I know I would buy it, and would look forward to each new year. Thanks for sharing these of Rachel, and the others on this site.

Barbara: Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!! The photos are exquisite and it gave me the chance to relive my memories of a great thoroughbred. I must have a thing for the girls -- Terlingua, All Along, Dahlia, Genuine Risk, Personal Ensign, Zenyatta and Rachel are (as you might remember re: Terlingua) some of my great loves. I was wondering: Do you have any of Rachel from the farm now that she's retired?

Barbara your photographs are absolutely amazing! I watch Rachel's races all the time on youtube -- I love to see her run -- she was sheer perfection in her movement. Every time I think of her I get a huge lump in my throat!
