Power of Pace

Pace made the race in two of last weekend's important grass events.

In the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup going nine furlongs at Keeneland, DAYATTHESPA, the lone confirmed speed on paper, made some quality rivals pay by setting dawdling splits of 24.52, 49.11 and 1:13.96 before turning on the afterburners at the quarter pole.  No filly was making up any ground due to those fractions and you may want to forgive the poor running lines put up by horses like STEPHANIE'S KITTEN.

In the Pattison Canadian International at Woodbine on Sunday, there was no speed on paper.  Good thing Frankie Dettori knows how to read a Daily Racing Form.  Dettori put JOSHUA TREE on the front through fractions of 25.52, 51.59 and 1:17.17 over the "good" turf course and Joshua Tree had just enough in the tank to last 12 furlongs over the rallying DANDINO.  WIGMORE HALL came with a good run to be fourth, but was simply too far back considering the way the race unfolded.

DELHOMME was the latest big-Beyer juvenile maiden winner sent out by Team Pletcher.  A $230,000 yearling that resold for $440,000 in March, Delhomme was the beaten favorite when racing greenly in his debut sprinting at Saratoga.  He got to the front in a one-mile race at Belmont on October 13 en route to a 94-Beyer score.  He is by Dixie Union out of Art Show, an Out of Place mare that won the Salem County Stakes going 1 Mile and 70 Yards on grass at the Meadowlands.

Considering the myriad physical problems he's suffered throughout his career, LUCKY PRIMO ran a remarkable race to win the California Cup Classic at Santa Anita.  He pressed a moderate pace, and that had to help, but he dug in very gamely to prevail in the lane.  He needs plenty of time between races, but next year's Cal Cup will likely be his long-term goal once again.

MACLEAN'S MUSIC, a blog favorite, was recently retired by Stonestreet Stables.  The winner of his lone start, a maiden special weight going six furlongs at Santa Anita on March 19, 2011 (114 Beyer Speed Figure), Maclean's Music fractured a splint bone and could never make it back to the races.  Maclean's Music will stand stud in 2013 at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Kentucky for a $6,500 fee.

Hi Dan,
I was sort of "mooshy-gooshy" for Harlan's Holiday during his career, mostly because he was SO honest.......15 times in the exacta and one 3rd from 22 starts, and most of that was accomplished at a very high level. Now, he has the Hopeful/Champagne winner in Shanghai Bobby, and the Champagne runner-up (Goldencents) is his grandson (not sure I'm ready for that, but time marches on).
Could I trouble you for Harlan's Holiday's PPs? I really appreciate it as always!

could you please post the life time pps of a horse named rumspringa trained by barclay tagg, and symphony of Psalms for bobby frankel. both horses were horses that ive cashed in on at belmont and saratoga. it would mean alot dan :)
Justin Nicklas

The past performances you requested are available at the bottom of this blog post.

Dan could you tell us what Ben's Cat numbers were.

Ben's Cat received an 87 Beyer Speed Figure for winning the Maryland Millon Turf Sprint Handicap at Laurel on October 6.  He is not nominated to the Breeders' Cup and is very unlikely to run in the Turf Sprint.  His lifetime past performances are available at the bottom of this blog post.

With Cambiocorsa's 2YO Moulin de Mougin having just broken her maiden (and looking good enough doing it that the commentators were burbling about the Juvenile Fillies Turf), I am wondering if you have any update on her eldest sister Schiaparelli. (Middle sis Vionnet is running Thursday). Schiaparelli also looked like a stakes horse to me, but seems to be having trouble staying in training?
Kyri Freeman

Schiaparelli recently returned to training in Southern California.  She worked three furlongs in 37.80 at Betfair Hollywood on October 11 and drilled a half-mile in 49.80 at Betfair Hollywood on October 17.  She is aiming for a winter return.

Congrats to Mike O for finishing first in last week's HandiGambling exercise.

Penn National Rick's scoresheet is available at the bottom of this blog post.

Let's go with Friday's seventh race at Keeneland for this week's HandiGambling exercise.

Remember that you have a mythical $100 with which to wager on the race, and the entrant with the highest money total will receive a "Monthly Enhanced 60-Card Past Performance Plan."
Anyone going over the $100 limit will be disqualified.
Please post your plays and analysis to the blog.
Please separate the play from the analysis and label the play "HG" with the program numbers (instead of the horse's name) for easier scoring.
In the event of a tie, the earliest post gets first preference. One entry per person please.
I reserve the right to approve or deny any entries.
I know that there is a time issue for some of you, but let's remember why we began the HandiGambling races in the first place. The goal was to share ideas on why we like these horses, and why we're betting them the way we are. I'm not asking for a novel, but if you could spare a sentence or two outlining your handicapping angles, and thought processes about wagering, it would be appreciated.
Best of luck to all.

Be back Friday with the HG analysis and some thoughts on the weekend stakes races.
