Pick Your Pick-4

All 11 of Saturday's graded stakes, including four Triple Crown preps, are part of pick-4's being offered by their five host tracks, including two overlapping pick-4's at Fair Grounds that pivot on the Risen Star:

The first Fair Grounds pick-4 and the Gulfstream sequence are all-stakes affairs, while others such as Golden Gate and the final Fair Grounds pick-4 also encompass statebred and maiden races.

Aqueduct is running its usual $250,000 guranteed late pick-4, starting with the 7th race at 3:27 p.m. ET. The sequence includes three statebred races, two of them maiden-claimers.

There's also the second Magna 5 of the year, starting with the 10th at Laurel (an allowance/optional claimer), carded for 4:53 pm ET, and continuing through the 9th at Gulfstream (Canadian Turf), 4th at Santa Anita (starter allowance), 10th at Gulfstream (Fountain of Youth) and 5th at Santa Anita (maidens.)

The most accomplished horse racing anywhere tomorrow is in an ungraded stakes that is not part of a pick-4: Gio Ponti, the champion turf horse and older male of 2009, who is prepping for the March 27 Dubai World Cup in the $150,000 Tampa Bay Breeders' Cup Stakes. Under the conditions of the race, the four-time Grade 1 winner and BC Classic runner-up carries just 116 pounds, six fewer than G3 winner Rahystrada, two fewer than Public Speaker and equal with the rest of the field.

Steve, I've been playing the horses seriously for 2 years, and playing as an ameteur since high school. I've studied numerous handicapping books and really am trying to take my skills to the next level. I was lucky enough for a 25K payday last year to boost my bankroll. Anyways, I just read your book Exotic Betting and it has opened up a new world for me. I have only tried your matrix strategy in the last two weeks, but it is already paying large dividends. I hit two .50 cent pick 4 plays at Gulfstream this week. Both with a backup ticket hitting. Yesterday, my backup A/A/A/C ticket had 12-1 morning line #1 Asset in the last leg as a C. Well, he wired the field at 16-1 for a $2500 cash. I hope to continue this streak going and truly wanted to say thanks.

On pick 4's, I wanted to see if you could clear up one thing - The seventh race at OP yesterday was a N2L, but Sherry's Tiger indicated two wins. How was this horse eligible?? [As the conditions at the top of the DRF pp's stated, the race was for 3-year-olds OR for 4-and-up which had never won two races. Sherry's Tiger is a 3-year-old and thus was eligible regardless of number of lifetime wins. --SC]

Steve, as a proponent of the elimination of handicaps in certain races, what do you think of Gio Ponti's weight assignment for the Tampa Bay? Aren't some of the concessions horses get under allowance conditions just as "unfair"? I find it appalling that the champion of the division is receiving weight from inferior opposition just because he hasn't won first money in awhile.
