Oaklawn: Gleaming in spotlight

Email

Gleaming, who won four of the first five races of her career, recaptured her best form Friday in the ninth race, when she stalked the pace than pulled away to win a $50,000 optional claiming allowance sprint for fillies and mares. She covered six furlongs in a sharp 1:09.99, and returned 9.20.

Gleaming came into the race off a ninth-place finish in the $50,000 American Beauty at Oaklawn on Jan. 23. She was making her stakes debut in the race after winning four consecutive overnight races at Remington Park. Cliff Berry rode Gleaming for the partnership of Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch and trainer Bret Calhoun.
