Oaklawn: Bullet move for Elite Alex

Email

Elite Alex, who is one of the more promising 3-year-olds stabled at Oaklawn Park, breezed five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.80 on Sunday morning. Jockey Calvin Borel was aboard for the move, which was the colt's first since he stumbled badly in a first-level allowance and sustained a small puncture wound in his left leg.

Trainer Tim Ritchey said the horse was able to get back to the track just a few days after that injury, and he is now being considered for a start in the Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 21. The one-mile race at Oaklawn is the first of two graded preps for the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby on April 16.

Elite Alex is a son of Afleet Alex, a champion trained by Ritchey.
