Oak Tree: Watching Pegasus fly

Champ Pegasus displayed a remarkable kick to win Sunday's Clement Hirsch Turf Championship and earn a spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Seventh with a quarter-mile remaining in the race over 1 1-4 miles on turf, Champ Pegasus closed six lengths in the final quarter-mile.

While the quality of the competition that Champ Pegasus beat in the Hirsch Turf Championship, and the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 29, are not as strong as past runnings of those races, the colt is improving, giving trainer Richard Mandella encouraging signs in the build-up to the Breeders' Cup.

The BC Turf will be a tough test for Champ Pegasus, his first start outside of California and a race that will feature runners from throughout the United States and Europe. Plus, the BC Turf will be Champ Pegasus's first start over 1 1-2 miles on turf. He may be worth a gamble, particularly as a colt capable of finishing in the top three.
