Oak Tree: PVal steals Las Palmas

Left alone on the lead, Briecat proved impossible to catch in Sunday's Grade 2 Las Palmas Handicap.

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Briecat led by two lengths on the backstretch and was fully extended to hold off Westwood Pride and win by a neck, finishing a mile on turf in 1:34.77. A modest pace of 24.20 and 47.93 seconds helped significantly, since Briecat was able to maintain a two-length lead around the turn.

Speaking about the jockey, trainer Vladimir Cerin said, "He's unbelievable."

Blue Maiden was the 6-5 favorite in the Las Palmas but offered no threat in the stretch, finishing two lengths behind Briecat.
