Oak Tree: Pick 6 gets tricky

Unusual Smoke ($21.20) wore down Mr. Katz in Friday's sixth race, the first longshot to win in the pick six sequence.

Unusual Smoke was ridden by Victor Espinoza and finished about a head in front of Mr. Katz, running a 1 1-16 miles on turf in 1:42.80 in the race for $28,000 to $32,000 claimers.

Unusual Smoke races for A.C. Avila and has had a busy autumn. Friday's race was his fifth start since Sept. 1 and sixth since returning from a four-month break in late August at Del Mar. The 5-year-old horse has won twice during that span. Third in the $500,000 Sunshime Millions Classic at Santa Anita in January, Friday's race was his lowest class level since he was claimed by current trainer A.C. Avila for $12,500 at Santa Anita in January 2009.

The $1 pick 3 ending with Unusual Smoke returned $241.80. Unusual Smoke was the seventh betting choice in a field of eight.
