Oak Tree: A new style for Smile

Email

Smiling Tiger inherited the lead in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 1 after expected pacesetter Cost of Freedom broke poorly and never recovered.

In Saturday's Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes, Smiling Tiger did not need the lead to win. He stalked Cost of Freedom for the first half-mile, racing a half-length behind the leader, took the lead in the final furlong and was fully extended to hold off a late run from Supreme Summit.

This was the best race of Smiling Tiger's nine-race career, and was his final prep for the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6. Winning that race will be difficult, but Smiling Tiger is bound for Kentucky in excellent form.
