Oak Tree: The Makoma-Zenyatta connection

Without getting toooooo carried away, there are a few similarities between Zenyatta, the unbeaten winner of 19 races, and Makoma, who won her career debut in Monday's third race.

Both are owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, trained by John Shirreffs, were 3-year-old fillies when they made their first starts, paid a decent price in maiden races and rallied to win from off the pace.

Makoma ($21.60) ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.19 on Monday, closing from third at the top of the stretch to win by 1 1-2 lengths over 2-5 favorite Lea the Punisher.

Makoma was Shirreffs's first debut winner since Zenyatta in late 2007.

"She'd been working well in the mornings," Shirreffs said of Makoma. "We liked her a lot. She really ran well."

Zenyatta won her 19th race in the Grade 1 Lady's Secret Stakes here on Oct. 2, and is being prepared for a start in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6. Reminded that Makoma only has to win 18 consecutive races to catch her stablemate, Shirreffs laughed. "Yeah, right," he said.
