Oak Tree: Liberian flags big win

Liberian Freighter ($46.60) won the first graded stakes of his 22-race career in an upset in Saturday's Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile.

Liberian Freighter, who won three statebred stakes earlier in his career, was the longest shot in a field of six in the $150,000 Oak Tree Mile. While the 5-year-old gelding has amassed a respectable $571,740 in his career, he is not the sort of horse that would go to the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.

Trainer Neil Drysdale said the $100,000 Califonria Cup Mile here on turf on Oct. 30 is a more likely goal.

Liberian Freighter finished a nose in front of Colgan's Chip, who is collecting tough losses in stakes this year. He was second by a head in the California Dreamin Handicap at Del Mar on July 25.
