Oak Tree: A Bob saves Kanan Dume

Email

Kanan Dume led throughout Saturday's second race for $25,000 claimers over 1 1-16 miles, but needed a bit of luck to win. He was bobbing heads with Job Boss in the final strides and had his head down when they reached the wire, winning by a nose.

Ridde by Matt Garcia, his first winner of the meeting, Kanan Dume ($9.80) set an early pace of 24.96 and 49.31 seconds, and finished in a slow 1:45.11.

Kanan Dume, a 5-year-old gelding, has had an odd campagin in recent months. He was second in a $32,000 claimer at Del Mar on Aug. 14, last of seven in the Grade 1 Pat O'Brien Stakes on Aug. 25 and second, as the 7-10 favorite, in a $12,500 claimer at Fairplex Park on Sept. 25. He figured to be the lone speed in a field of six on Saturday and used those tactics to his advantage.

Gold Star Status, who finished last, was claimed for $25,000 by Jack Carava.
