Oak Tree: 'Awesome', 'Daylight' look sharp

In consecutive races on Saturday, the favorites Awesome Patriot and Daylight Storm won overnight races in styles that suggest they are horses to follow in coming months.

The first-time starter Awesome Patriot ($5) led throughout a maiden race for 2-year-olds over 6 1-2 furlongs, winning by a length over an unlucky Oakcrest Drive, who broke slowly. Awesome Patriot set a slow pace - 24.14 and 48.52 seconds - and finished in 1:18.34. Owned by Terry Lanni and trained by Bob Baffert, Awesome Patriot , who is by Awesome Again, was purchased for $350,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Daylight Storm ($3.60) won an allowance race for statebreds by 1 1-2 lengths over A Plus Topper. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Daylight Storm ran six furlongs in 1:10.13, his 6th win in 16 starts. Trained by Ted H. West, Daylight Storm was claimed for $50,000 at Del Mar on Aug. 12. In his first start for West, he was second in an optional claimer for statebreds.

One point of concern is that Daylight Storm wore front wraps for the first time in his recent races.
