The owners of Rockingham Park held a liquidation sale in late September.  Although live racing at the Salem, N.H., track ceased in 2009, and simulcasting in August, countless fans and collectors streamed into the aging building one last time to bid on memorabilia and to reminisce about bygone days at ‘the Rock.’

Sgt. James "Jim" Quinlan, who lived near Saratoga Springs, NY, died more than a decade ago.  I knew him from some chance meetings at the track, one visit at a park, a few exchanged Christmas cards, a handful of precious photos he sent.  Yet my thoughts turn to him every Veterans Day because, to me, he is the true representation of a great veteran, gentleman, American.

Pennsylvania Derby day 2014 was a day to remember - in large part due to the appearance of the immensely popular California Chrome.  Many fans in the upbeat crowd (estimated 16,000+) wore California Chrome shirts or carried 'Chrome' signs, and applause greeted the dual-classic winner before and after the PA Derby.  Yet the race went to Bayern, in easy fashion and in track-record time.  Heavily-favored Untapable powered home in the Cotillion.
