1:05 pm: Today's pick-6 sequence at Saratoga is as big a mystery as why the feature race is named the Shakespeare Caress Stakes. I've about given up trying to answer the first riddle, and am going to pass and root for a double-carryover to Wednesday, but  I've solved the latter.

12:55 pm: Main track muddy, turf good, four races on the grass (4,7,8 and 9) and two moved to the main track (6 and 11) for Day 9. The featured G2 Amsterdam looks to me like one of the more wide-open races on a card where many of the other events have two or three obvious, seemingly dominant contenders, I have 5 of the 7 open as win candidates.

12:55 pm: Main track and turf both labelled "good" and no scratches from the G1 Diana or G2 Jim Dandy for the second Saturday of Saratoga 2012. All five turf races are still on the grass, but it's cloudy and humid and there are forecasts of "developing showers" so stay tuned.

2:20 pm: Last night's rain has knocked 4 of Friday's 5 grass races at Saratoga off the turf and on to the currently sloppy main track. The 2nd stays at 5 1/2 furlongs. The 5th and 7th, originally carded for 1 1/16 miles, will be run at 1 1/8 miles. The finale, carded for a mile, drops back to seven furlongs.

12:25 pm: Post times are being accelerated Thursday at Saratoga in an attempt to squeeze in a 10-race card with six grass races before predicted thunderstorms hit later today.
