I could live to be whatever I'll be next year and still not have this social network thing nailed, especially when it comes to self-promotion. To wit:

It can be argued that Twirling Candy is not the best older horse in North America. I am open to alternative suggestions. You like Tizway? Fine, it was a heckuva Met Mile. Giant Oak's still got a few fans, but that Donn is fading fast. Choose a 'Dude' if you like -- First or Game on -- but don't bet the grocery dough. How about Tackleberry? Apart? Regal Ransom? Choose one of them and you might as well line up behind Awesome Gem, the George Blanda of the division, who is still making his presence felt when the spirit moves, even at the ripe old age of eight.

Happy 90th birthday to Jack Robbins, who was born on May 28, 1921, which turned out to be a very good day for horse racing. Robbins has been a breeder, an owner, and a racing empressario, but most of all he was among the pioneers of racetrack veterinary medicine -- the good kind of racetrack veterinary medicine. The kind that does not tap a joint first and ask questions later. The kind that does not store snake venom in a trainer's tack room fridge. The kind that does not hide behind trainer responsibility rules.

Replays are a wonderful thing. I was alive when there was no such creature, and yes, that makes me a hundred and thirty-eight. Never mind. The Preakness from last Saturday deserves any number of views -- unless you are Graham Motion, then once was enough -- so at one point I turned off the sound, stripped out the colors and disregarded all other distractions save the blaze on the face of the breakaway leader and the determined progress of the horse closing down the middle of the Pimlico stretch. It was 2009 all over again.

There are any number of reasons to root-root-root for Derby hero Animal Kingdom to win the Preakness on Saturday, not the least of them the fact that there can be no Triple Crown winner this year unless he does. This is important, we have been told, because, a) a Triple Crown winner will save horse racing, b) no one really believes the Triple Crown can be won, c) NYRA needs the cash and, d) Sir Barton would like to stop spinning in his grave.
