Monmouth: Wildcat Brief Wins Icecapade

Yet another outside closer to win this weekend, Wildcat Brief made a wide but steady run to capture the Icecapade Stakes at 5-1. The prevailing bias no doubt aided the cause but he was a horse with a big shot on an even track as well, as his latest wasn't as bad as it looked (a lack of speed in the field forced him to stay closer to the pace than usual) and he was sharp in defeat two back, and in victory three back. It was the 4th win on the card for jockey Elvis Trujillo, who won five on Saturday.

The Red Bank is up next, and Get Serious (#4) looms very tough as the controlling speed, especially with the scratch of stretch-out sprinter General Perfect. He certainly figures tough (he opened up at 4/5) but I can't shake the fact that although he was ultra-game to win the Oceanport in his latest he had a big pace advantage there as well, and it took a huge effort for him to come back and beat Violon Sacre. Now, there may or may not be a runner as good as Violon Sacre in this field but it's just something to consider when you're looking at an odds-on choice.
