Monmouth: We're Off! (Way off)

Email

The 2011 meet got underway about 90 minutes ago but the Inside Post was a bit slow out of the gate, thanks to some computer issues. Here's what we missed:

A key scratch in the opener (Gentle Edwin) left very little speed in the race, yet Brown's Hill came from just off the pace to win. Upgrade the stone closers, they had little chance.

Heavy favorite Crafty's Last Call never looked like a winner at any point in the 2nd race, but longshots Sonic Bullet and Irish Latearrival came to play and completed an $1896 exacta, in that order.

Bob Benoit, despite a slow start, ran down the pacesetting Cinnamon Road to win the 3rd. This was a short field that may have been short on pace, but that label would make the effort by the winner exceptional. Maybe it was. Barely Nothing made a decent middle move before tiring.

Favorite Voodoo Charm, who looked much the best on paper, was also much the best on the main track, beating an apparently lackluster group of statebred maiden claimers. He was an easy winner, and he could make some noice this summer against Jersey breds, but the rest  may have just been sub-par.
