Monmouth: On the turf...for now

The main track is "muddy" and the turf course is listed as "good" with about 15 minutes to post for the opener, but the smart money is betting that will change for the worse. In fact, I won't be making any advance bets until the weather situation stablizes. Right now, it's raining at a fairly steady clip, and the problem is it's supposed to be unsettled all day long, which means there's not likely to be a stretch of sun to dry things out.

There are a couple of things to watch for today: One is the "rematch" in the 8th race between Mywifenosevrything vs. Thewifedoesntknow, if you're interested in that sort of thing. Much more important in the eyes of horseplayers is the much anticipated return of sharp debut winner Erin Rose in race nine. She made an electrifying run to make the lead on the turn, drawing off through the stretch to win easily on the Haskell undercard, and though fillies making their 2nd starts off impressive first-out scores many times regress that usually happens when the horse in question was loose on the lead. Erin Rose showed a good rating gear and wasn't asked at all late in that score, and I, for one, expect her to run big once again. She'll be odds-on, so a bet is out of the question, but I wouldn't play against her despite the fact that she's no lock against a decent field.
