Monmouth: Speed Rules on Turf

Like last weekend, the fractions on the turf course here today and yesterday were too fast to be believed. Since the course dried out after heavy rains a few weeks back horses have been routinely running through opening quarters through fractions posted as :22, or less. This course has never consistently played this quickly before but it seems to be a byproduct of strong speed bias -- frontrunners have held a big edge on this course since October 3rd, when grass racing picked up again after heavy rains fell a few days before that card.

Any closer on this course, today or yesterday, can be confidently forgiven for any sub-par efforts they may have turned in, because they had little chance under the conditions. Conversely, the speeds should be downgraded, including Gandolph Finch (8t) and Bella d'Oro (10th). The latter is a horse I'm especially looking to bet against next time, as she used the bias to her best advantage today and she also won her latest thanks in large part to a loose lead in a paceless race.
