Monmouth: Short Field, Long Price

Email

Sopchoppy, longest price on the board at 18-1 in the 3rd race, parlayed a forward trip and slow fractions into an upset score over five rivals, including impressive maiden winners Breathoffreshheir and Pomeroys Pistol.

The daughter of Drewman had to withstand an objection, as there was some jostling among the leaders coming into the lane, but she was clearly best, and that minor incident at the top of the stretch was nothing that gave her an advantage.

There's a good shot at a Pick 4 carryover with two of the four races in the books. This filly not only paid $38 but given the composition of the sequence this was the one race where bettors likely felt they could wrap it up with one or two runners. That, coupled with the win for 1-for-25 Wild Sage ($34.40) in the opening leg, undoubtedly leaves a small percentage of tickets alive.
