Monmouth: Fast and Good

The main track is "fast" and turf course is listed, surprisingly, as "good", as Thursday's storms seemed to assure we'd be off the grass today. I guess the relative lack of precipitation this summer has made for a course which can handle that kind of downpour.

It's all New Jersey breds today, which markes the NJ Thoroughbred Festival. Bettors who have followed this meet since the start back in May will appreciate the card, which is made up almost exclusively of horses who raced here this summer, aside, of course, from the firsters.

The opener went to favored Readybdancing (#13), who may have been much the best anyway, but it is at least curious that he was widest in the lane, and that has been the best type of trip for the past few weeks. The results of one race are not nearly enough evidence to make a determination on track bias, and Wild Cat Sue did run well enough in finishing third after racing inside all the way, but it's certainly worth keeping an eye on this trend.
