Monmouth: Fast and Firm

It's another beautiful fall day in Oceanport, fast and firm and seasonably cool. The temporary rail is out 36 feet, and it will likely remain there for as long as grass racing continues this season, with the inside part of the course already closed for the winter.

Closers, though not necessarily outside closers, did best yesterday. That said, it was nothing like the dead rail phenomenon that persisted here in late August/early September, as horses down inside for much of the running also won on the card. The lone grass race yesterday went to the heavy favorite, I Love It, who rallied after sitting well off the early tempo. That one race doesn't give you much evidence but it could be that the grass course, which favored speed despite producing very fast splits the previous two weekends, is back to normal.
