There has been a lot of talk about the historically low 97 Beyer Speed Figure California Chrome received for winning the Kentucky Derby, and I wanted to throw in my two cents on the subject.

Regardless of what post she drew (she drew the far outside in a field of 13), Untapable at 4-5 on the morning line for Friday’s Kentucky Oaks makes complete sense to me. A morning line on her of 3-5 would have made sense, too. We’ve known for weeks that Untapable would be favorite for the Oaks by an even bigger margin than California Chrome will be in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, and California Chrome will be favorite Saturday by a substantial margin.

With the book of the same name, author Thomas Wolfe helped crystalize the concept that you can’t go home again. But I found out, during a day trip Saturday to Atlantic City Race Course, that you can go back. Sort of. Atlantic City Race Course is special to me because, two years into my first stint with Daily Racing Form, I was made columnist there in one of my first writing assignments for the paper. That was 32 years ago, and until Saturday, I hadn’t been back in 31 years.
