Louisiana Downs: Calhoun talks distance, turf test for Exchanted

Email

Exchanted will be making both her two-turn and turf debut in this afternoon’s sixth race, the $50,000 Donnie Wilhite Memorial for 2-year-old fillies at seven and a half furlongs. The stakes serves as a steppingstone to the $100,000 Happy Ticket at a mile on turf at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 10.

Exchanted was a six and a half length debut winner at Louisiana Downs on July 9. She covered five and a half furlongs in 1:06.20, and earned a Beyer Figure of 70.

“She’s got some pedigree for the grass,” said Bret Calhoun, who trains Exchanted. “She’s got Exchange Rate on the top. She’s out of Waverly Bell, who was a good mare for Bill Reed. I don’t think turf or distance will hurt her any. I think she’s supposed to handle the turf and the [seven and a half furlongs] okay.”

Exchange Rate was 2-for-4 on turf. Waverly Bell was a six-time stakes winner who won two route races during her career. Justin Shepherd has the mount on the Reed-owned Exchanted, who should start as one of the top choices along with Little Ms Protocol, winner of the $50,000 Princess at five furlongs on turf last month at Louisiana Downs.
