Louisiana Downs: Calhoun hoping Worthington can get two-turns in Sunny's Halo

The Bret Calhoun-trained Worthington will attempt to stretch his speed in the eighth race at Louisiana Downs,  the $50,000 Sunny’s Halo. The seven and a half furlong turf stakes is for 2-year-olds. Worthington comes into the race off a front-running win in the $50,000 Minstrel at five furlongs on turf. Justin Shepherd was aboard and has the mount again in the Sunny’s Halo.

“Justin and I talked shortly after the last race he ran at Louisiana Downs and he felt it would be no problem getting him to rate and relax,” Calhoun said. “So, we’ve seen a couple of things that give us hope he will go two turns.”

Worthington’s final drill for the Sunny’s Halo was a leisurely half-mile in 52 seconds at Lone Star Park on July 30.

“It was a slow, relaxed work,” said Calhoun. “We didn’t want to key him up and get him on edge for the two turns.”

The Sunny’s Halo is a prep for the $150,000 Sunday Silence at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 10.
