Lone Star: Purkey Turkey is popular

With a name like Purkey Turkey, the winner of the fifth race got her fair share of shout-outs from the young, casual fans who are ontrack tonight for a concert following the races. She deserved the cheers, too. Purkey Turkey, who opened up as the favorite in the $15,000 maiden claiming turf sprint for fillies and mares, drifted back up to 9-2 and paid a generous $11.20.

Purkey Turkey, who invaded from Evangeline Downs, was making her turf debut. Her sire, Seeking a Home, gets 10 percent winners from his first-time turfers and 21 percent winners overall on the grass. Erik McNeil rode Purkey Turkey for trainer Glynn Winn.
