Lone Star Park: Trials, Camels & Ostriches

It will truly be a night of mixed-breed racing Friday at Lone Star Park, where there will be races for Quarter Horses, camels and ostriches. The action starts with the Quarter Horses, who will run in five trials for the Grade 1, $175,000 Dash for Cash Derby.

The first of the trials is the third race in which Grade 2 winner Capo di Capi will be seeking his sixth consecutive win. The fourth race drew the multiple Grade 1-placed Dominyun; the fifth race features last year's 2-year-old champion, American Runaway; while the seventh race is led by recent $200,000 Retama Park Derby winner Fly Corona.

The action will turn exotic after the last race Friday. In two separate charity events on the main track, five ostriches will compete in a race for designated causes, to be followed by four camels doing the same in a second race. The races are non-wagering events. The animals are to be ridden by Quarter Horse jockeys G.R. Carter Jr., Russel Hadley, Luis Ramirez, Ricky Ramirez and Jerry Lee Yoakum.
