Lexington Selected Yearling Sale - Day 1

I’ll never profess to be an expert when it comes to breeding. My knowledge is somewhat limited to the stallions and broodmares that come to mind from their former racing days. But all that is going to change (slowly, probably).

On October 1 I will attend the Lexington-Selected sale with the hopes of expanding my horizons and bringing some insight to the DRF Harness audience on the happenings at the sale. So, you can look forward to some increased coverage, especially on the first two days when the best horses usually strut through the sales ring.

Day one (10/1) kicks off with 106 yearlings scheduled to get hammered down starting at 7 pm. Below are my top 25 to watch (in HIP order), with in many cases, added insight from the breeder. In my next blog, we’ll take a look at what some breeders feel are their best buys for day two and beyond.

HIP 3 – Shouldhavebetmore

Colt is a full brother to Drop The Ball ($1,261,736) and Straight Shooting ($719,198). March foal is a Pennsylvania eligible.

HIP 5 – Mohawk Warrior

He is the first foal out of $1,472,566 earner A And G’s Confusion. The colt is by Rocknroll Hanover and is New Jersey eligible.

HIP 20 – Highlandopheliaroc

February-foaled filly is from a family of winners. Dam produced a slew of top performers, including Artistic Vision ($634,808), who produced the great Rock N Roll Heaven ($2,748,818) and Clear Vision ($1.4 million and counting).

HIP 44 – Taxed To The Max

Here is a Pennsylvania eligible full brother to The Chancellor ($691,366). Mom also produced $400k-plus performers Beer Summit and Prime Interest.

HIP 47 – ASAP Hanover

May colt comes from a good family. Mom produced solid Open horse Abelard Hanover ($453k). Second dam begot All Speed Hanover ($748k) and third shows world champion Eternal Camnation ($3.7 million).

Murray Brown (Hanover Shoe Farms) – “Without a doubt our top yearling both on paper and maybe as an individual as well. He has a great look to him, he moves well and he hits a pace easily in the paddock. He has a great pedigree.

“I kind of think he is the best we have. He’d be borderline upper-echelon. It all depends on where you place upper-echelon. If you are talking $300,000 colts, probably not. Certainly $100k-plus, he is there.”

HIP 49 – Hard Rock

March colt is a full brother to the great Rock N Roll Heaven. Prolific broodmare Artistic Vision has never had a foal sell for lower than $57k and her top yearling went for $450k. This New Jersey bred Hunterton Farm is sure to attract attention.

Steve Stewart (Hunterton Farm) – “He is a very nice colt and is similar to Rock N Roll Heaven in that he is easy to be around and laid back. He is bigger than some of the [foals] from last year, but none are really big. He is probably our best pacing colt.”

HIP 52 – Opening Night Gem

Colt is the first out of former 3-year-old Pacing Filly of the Year Yellow Diamond ($1.3 million), whose mom Mattatonic also produced another millionaire in Economy Terror ($1.5 million). New York eligible son of Rock N Roll Heaven looks like a potential good one.

Steve Jones (Cameo Hills Farms) - “I named him when he was one month old. I didn’t have to look at him very long to see he would be in the opening night of the sale. I could not be more pleased with the colt. He is outstanding looking.”

HIP 56 – Rockn Royalty

This is the second foal from world champion superstar Darlin’s Delight ($2.9 million). April foal was raised at White Birch Farm.

HIP 57 – Mr Lucky Luke

January colt is a half-brother to Hambletonian winner Muscle Massive and top performers Muscle Mass and Thatsnotmyname. This is dam Graceful Touch’s first foal by Lucky Chucky.

Steve Stewart – “This colt is as good as it gets. It is rare that you get a super-bred horse that is a super individual like this one.”

HIP 58 – Enough Terror

Another first foal in the sale and this one is by world champion Not Enough ($1.3 million). Colt’s third dam was a prolific producer with six $200k-plus winners to her credit.

HIP 61 – About To Bee

Filly is a half-sister to Hambletonian Oaks winner and perfect-in-2013 Bee A Magician. That should draw some attention. February foal from White Birch Farm is Pennsylvania eligible.

HIP 68 – Lupe Hanover

Filly is a half-sister to Lookout Hanover ($405k) and the fast Lonewolf Currier ($295k). This May foal is the first Ladyking has had by Somebeachsomewhere.

HIP 69 – MTV Blue Chip

You may need to loosen your purse strings for this New York bred full sister to 3-year-old Pacing Colt of the Year Heston Blue Chip ($1.4 million) and Sunfire Blue Chip ($485k). Both have paced sub 1:49 miles.

Mike Kimelman (Blue Chip Farms) – “She is medium-sized but very pretty and athletic. I think we have a strong group of fillies. The Rock N Roll Heaven (HIP 34) and Somebeachsomewhere (HIP 88) fillies also are standouts.”

HIP 71 – Unmarked Trail

Colt is the first from My Fantasy ($344,284) and sired by Rocknroll Hanover. Bloodlines on the dam’s side shows notables My Little Dragon ($2.3 million), Deliquent Account ($1,038,997) and Artiscape ($1.4 million).

HIP 73 – Natural Kemp

This first foal is a black colt from Impressive Kemp ($501,074), whose mom produced eight foals that have sold for an average of just under $180k. New Jersey eligible is by Muscle Yankee.

Steve Stewart - “He looks like a top colt. He is kind of like a mare; not a big horse, but long and balanced.”

HIP 76 – Blown Away Bombay

Colt is a full brother to Major Bombay ($553k) and full sister to top 2-year-old filly She’s Da Bomb. April foal is New York eligible and clearly has potential.

HIP 77 – Suchasenseofhumor

Dam Don’t You Smile was solid on the track and has produced $902,898 earner and recent Little Brown Jug winner Vegas Vacation. This is her first foal by NY eligible Rock N Roll Heaven.

HIP 79 – The Donato Chapter

April foal is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Chapter Seven. This is the first foal from La Riviera Lindy from Donato Hanover.

Steve Jones - “She has all the tools; looks, pedigree and a good attitude.”

HIP 80 – Custom Fit

Colt from Brittany Farms has sale-topper potential on paper. This is the third foal from Gala Dream by sire Cantab Hall and the first two – Pastor Stephen ($1,048,607) and 2-year-old Father Patrick ($436,507) - have been super.

Art Zubrod (Brittany Farms) – “He is everything you would want him to be coming into the sale and there are parts of him that I like better than his brothers. He is a little bigger (than brothers) and has a great attitude.”

HIP 82 – Bright Baby Blues

Former 3-year-old Trotting Filly of the Year Bar Slide produced this filly with her first foal. The Pennsylvania eligible bay is by Andover Hall.

HIP 90 – Boli

Colt could be another in the bunch by star trotter Pizza Dolce to perform at a high level. Bella Dolce ($730k), Miss Paris ($865k) and For You Almostfree ($309k) are her top on-track performers.

HIP 96 – Southwind Torque

Colt is a half-brother to the great Southwind Tempo ($2.3 million), Hula’s Z Tam ($971k) and Southwind Tabor ($861k). He is a Pennsylvania eligible March colt.

HIP 97 – Mcpheeters

Colt could gain some attention as a full brother to $910,033 earner Guccio. He is a February foal with Pennsylvania eligibility.

HIP 103 – Enerhax Hanover

February foal is the first colt from Erma La Em ($195k). Family has produced Grissini ($405k), Kinney Hanover ($777k), Lawgiver Hanover ($297k) and Lucan Hanover (1:48 3/5).

Murray Brown – “We have several sired by Well Said. They have really come on in the last few weeks. One of them won the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final. We have a Well Said colt out of Erma La Em that I love very much.”

HIP 104 – Hey There Delilah

Filly is a full sister to the fastest pacing filly in history, Put On A Show. It is worth noting that this daughter of Rocknroll Hanover is a late June 1 foal.
