Knocked out

Email

I was living on borrowed time in Santa Anita ShowVivor.

The online contest (www.santaanita.com) requires a player to pick one horse a day to hit the board. Not too tough, right?

Six days into the contest, more than 80 percent of the 4,596 orginal players already were gone.

I somehow hung on for dear life through six racing days between Jan. 1 through Jan. 8.

It was not pretty.

Real Rockport finished a bad third at odds-on Jan. 2.

Temp finished a bad third Jan. 7.

Derrick Do was fully extended to hold third on Jan. 8.

Alive, alive and still alive.

Then came Thursday.

My contest pick was Coffee Gossip in race 8, the “most probable winner” on the card.

Coffee Gossip was awful. He never reached contention as the 2.40-1 second favorite.

He finished off the board, out of the money, never in the hunt.

At the end of Thursday, 772 ShowVivor players remained alive.

Another 3,824 are out.

On the seventh day of ShowVivor, I got knocked out.

Well, all I can say is better luck the next time. I am still a 30 percent winner after about 40 years.

I know exacly how you feel. I got through the first six days also before getting knocked out. It seems so easy but we know it isn't. Better luck next time.
