Keeneland: Thoughts thru race four on Wednesday

A few thoughts with four races in the books on a Wednesday card at Keeneland.

Intercoastal, the favorite in race one, a starter $16,000 claimer, is one of those unpredictable frontrunners - one that can dominate and look like something special one day, or just as easily run off and quit in the lane.

He did the latter in the opener, fading to fifth as the 3-5 favorite, and Rockin' Joe ($13) capitalized, overcoming a troubled trip to rally from fifth on his way to a two-length victory over 9-1 Big Al.

A race later, Jim N Peg's Gal took the seocnd race at 18-1 for trainer Michelle Lovell, who is enjoying a productive meet with runners shipped here from Louisiana Downs.

Jockey Marlon St. Julien, back in Kentucky full time for this meet after being absent for many years, picked up his first winner of the meet.

Open Outcry ($5.60) then won the third race as the favorite, just outfinishing a game Mr. Universo - giving his trainer, Wayne Catalano, a one-race edge over Ken McPeek in the race for leading trainer.

Interestingly, McPeek trained the runner-up.

And then Tiz Late ($8.40) wired the field in race four for $16,000 claimers, moving up in his second start of the meet, and even more so, from a cutback in distance and drop from $25,000 company.
